I don't see how the numbering helps in it's UX. Seems distracting to me. Maybe it's their colour. If they were a weaker grey than the items text I think it would be a lot nicer.

I think the numbering offers a sense of placement for the user. It functions just like breadcrumbs without having to add breadcrumbs. I dig it.
